3D special effects in science fiction movies

  • Research Problem
Lack of quality in China 3D  special effect

Rationale

I like science fiction movies very much because the special effects in science fiction movies attract me very much. But after comparison, I can find that most of the famous science fiction films are from Europe and America, while compared with China, science fiction films are very lack of attraction. Nowadays, more and more directors pursue their own economic interests, thus reducing the funding for film and television synthesis in the middle and late stages, making many film and television plays very rough in 3D synthesis and production, and even because of these important 3D synthesis parts, the effect of the whole film and television play is greatly discounted. Especially in many posts synthesis parts, the overall appearance will be very cheap and rough because of the lack of exquisite production. Therefore, how to support and guide the development of “diversification” of China’s animation industry, especially to support the new media animation in network platform by the policy and the funds, will become an important issue confronted by the directors and the animation industry policy makers. (Si-da, L.I. and Yang, C.H.E.N., 2012.)

With the promotion of 3D applications, new theories and technologies emerge in endlessly. Post processing is the image processing performed after painting the scene. Various special effects generated through post-processing directly display and restore many scenes, which can increase the sense of realism and immersion in actual 3D applications. In the field of real-time rendering applications, post-processing effects become more and more important.(Nan Du, Chuandong Yu,2020.)More research shows that 3D special effect movies are very important for children's visual cognition.(Seçil Yücelyiğit, Neriman Aral,2013.)

Problem statement

After watching a lot of science and technology movies, I can find that in Chinese science and technology movies, the 3D special effects are quite fake, and there is a problem that they don't look three-dimensional enough. Many 3D special effects even look like animated movies. In the movie "No. 7 of the Yangtze River", the main character is made with 3D special effects for seven years. The protagonist in the special effects is very delicate. Every action and every expression are done in place. The meticulous special effects make the film more sci-fi and lifelike.

Most scenes of Shanghai Fortress movies involve the production of digital characters. However, because the special effects are too crude, and it seems that the main character's cutout is put into the background of the movie, the background looks very like animation, and it is very sudden to put it together with people. This special effect is not realistic enough, or it lacks 3D vision.

Japanese robot experts once proposed a "horror Valley theory", which means that the higher the simulation degree of humanoid toys or robots, the more people will have a favorable impression.( niubl. 2022.) However, before the similarity approaches 100%, this kind of favorable impression will suddenly decrease to the bottom. Many people think that the "horror Valley trap" is a difficult problem in computer animation production. "Avatar" is a successful leap to this point. It uses special effects to make a very real movie world. Although the appearance of the Na'vi on Pandora is different from that of the Earthlings, they have no sense of roughness or falsehood. This is due to the use of motion capture technology in the film. All the people are live performers, and the faces and expressions of the characters are clearly visible. Pandora planet is virtual, but its reality is comparable to that of photos. Through the use of extensive depth planes and negative parallax (the pop-out effect), audiences are brought towards an immersive screen space. At the same time, knowledge of the optical illusion inherent in the 3-D images means that complex relations between audiences and images are maintained. (Screen,2012,p381-397)

  • Hypothesis
When special effects can be integrated with reality
  • Research objective
Learn how to let the special effects created by 3D technology more three-dimensional and realistic than thecurrent picture.
  • Research question
How to improve the 3D special effect?
