Topic 3 -:
[Unity/ Harmony/ Symbol/ Word and Image]

LECTURES
Unity:

  • Order and organisation
  • Working together to reinforce a message
  • Proximity/ Alignment/ Repetition can be used to achieve unity but balance them with variety or contrast

Harmony:

  • Combining related elements (Adjacent colours/ Similar shapes/ Similar textures)
  • The elements feel like they belong together
  • Best combined with variety or contrast to avoid monotony

Symbol:

  • Representation of something
  • To convey an information or a whole story
  • Pictorial symbols - Vector illustration/ Simplified visual diagram
  • Abstract symbols - Representation of a subject but with minimal details
  • Arbitrary symbols - No resemblance to the subject represented; Has to be learnt

Word and Image:

  • Pair relevant image with the right words
  • Related to typography

Unity

Unity refers to the combination of certain repetitive elements to make the picture harmonious.Unity occurs when these elements are composed in such a way that they are balanced and give a sense of oneness, creating a theme.

Harmony

Harmony involves the selection of elements that share a common trait.
• Harmony becomes monotony without variety*.
• Harmony is the sense that all of the elements of your design fit together. They may fit the same theme, aesthetic style or mood.

IDEA EXPLORATION & DESCRIPTION

Unity

IMG_3547.heic

This was my first game about Unity. It's two fish intertwined together to form a pattern similar to Tai Chi.

With the first design, I still didn't change the concept, but changed the overall layout.

The third design is the same as the first two.

Harmony

IMG_3548.heic

This was my first work, but it wasn't quite Harmony.

This is the second work, using pencils arranged in different heights.

This is the third work, using clouds and sun in nature.

Final work

In the final work, I chose fish and lotus flowers, which reflect each other to form the tai Chi pattern.

Finally, I chose the picture of cloud and sun. Both clouds and sun are part of nature, and they are very harmonious together.

Feedback

Since I confused the definitions of the two concepts in the first design, my tutor suggested that I continue to use the pattern of Tai Chi to make changes.Among the three works, my tutor told me that the first one was not in line with the theme of Harmony, and it was easier for things in nature to create this theme, so the latter two works came into being.

Reflection

During the two weeks' study, I felt very deeply. Unity and Harmony both translate as harmony, but they are fundamentally different. Under the guidance of my tutor, I made clear the difference between the two, which was of great help to my improvement and my works.
