Topic 2 -:
[Emphasis/ Balance/ Repetition/ Movement]

LECTURES
Emphasis:

  • Attention-seeker
  • Can be achieved using value/ colour/ atmospheric perspective/ composition/light

Balance:

  • Equal distribution of visual weight
  • Viewer feels comfortable

Symmetrical:

  • Divide a picture in half, the elements on one side will be the same with the other side.
  • Axis may be horizontally and vertically, or even arranged from the central point that spreads outwards, resulting in radial balance.

Asymmetrical:

  • Strategic placement of elements with different sizes/shapes that balance each other out.
Repetition:
  • Creates rhythm and pattern as well as consistency in a work
  • A good move when combined with variety to avoid monotony

Movement:
  • The path the eyes follow

59 Stunningly Repetitive Photos Your Brain Will Love

Repetition is the property of overlapping and combining many of the same elements, which makes the picture more vivid. This design element makes the work more rich and layered, avoiding the monotony of the design work.

Balance

a new day will always come. take comfort in this

The search for balance is a constant, embrace all of your inner selves. Printed on 100lb glossy, heavyweight paper, hand-signed, packaged with backing board.

There are two kinds of balance, one is perfect symmetry, the other is weight balance. Balance makes the picture beautiful and harmonious, which is a design concept I like very much.

IDEA EXPLORATION & DESCRIPTION

Repetition

IMG_3364.heic

I used the tattoo on my body as the design element for the creation. I used small fish as the basic element and arranged it into a big fish

IMG_3363.heic

I started thinking of Chinese Yin and Yang elements, of water droplets, and repeated them to form this work.

Balance

IMG_3367.heic

I used complete symmetry in this work, which is the sun on the sea, but AFTER finishing this work, I think the picture looks very simple.

IMG_3365.heic

The second work is the same. Two Chinese folding fans are used to make them symmetrical and balanced in the picture.

I used ASYMMETRICAL BALANCE for this one. The theme is Mount Fuji, which is balanced by geese and floating clouds in the upper left corner and trees in the lower right corner.

Final outcome

When using the element of fish to change the creation, I made them into the pattern of the eye of the boulder. Make the pattern look more stylish.

For this work, I added color, changed the goose in the upper left corner to the moon, and then increased the layers of plants in the lower right corner to make it more weightier.

Feedback

The tutor saw these two works and preferred to use small fish as the element, but the pattern was a little monotonous, so he asked me to change the final pattern. My tutor chose the work of Mount Fuji, and told me to lower the theme a little and make geese and floating clouds more detailed.

Reflection

After two weeks of study, I feel the balance and repetition of these two seemingly simple design concepts are different. They are very simple, but they can turn a simple work into gorgeous.By changing the work, I also feel the importance of design methods, which are the most important things to make a good work.
